Sino que tenían nombres aburridos y genéricos como este. Esta serie introdujo al personaje de Superman en su número #1, pero en un comienzo también contaba con otras historias además de Superman, como Zatara o Tex Thompson, entre otros. Ha mantenido su nombre hasta el día de hoy. Fue el cuarto título de DC Comcis, viniendo después de Detective Comics. Luego se convierte en Action Comics Vol 2 entre el 905 y el 956 para volver a su numeración original con DC Rebirth en 2016.
