La historia comienza el día que Usagi Tsukino se cruza con una gata negra que tiene una mancha con forma de luna creciente. La felina, llamada Luna, le revela un secreto, Usagi es una Sailor Senshi y debe derrotar a los enemigos de la Tierra y salvar a la princesa de la Luna. Desde ese momento, Sailor se hace llamar Sailor Moon y lucha como justiciera para acabar con los planes del Reino Oscuro, los primeros de la larga lista de villanos con los que se tendrá que cruzar. A Sailor Moon se le unen otras Sailor Senshi, que le ayudan en su cruzada. Ellas son Sailor Mercury, Sailor Mars, Sailor Jupiter y Sailor Venus.
